The Beta Iota Chapter

On April 18, 2010, the Beta Iota  Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was chartered at the University of Bridgeport. This marked a significant moment, as it brought the prestigious organization's legacy to a community that greatly needed its influence at the undergraduate level. The initiation ceremony, held in the private dining room of the John J. Cox Student Center under the supervision of the Theta Tau Omega chapter, was the beginning of a transformative presence in Bridgeport, Connecticut. As the only Divine Nine organization on campus at the time, Beta Iota assumed a unique and crucial role in shaping student leadership and community engagement. 

Led by its first President Duanecia Clark (Evans), these women quickly established Beta Iota as a beacon of excellence and service. Through innovative programs like "Know Your Worth" and the award-winning "Red Kampaign," the chapter addressed vital issues affecting college women and the broader Bridgeport community. Beta Iota's consistent academic excellence, maintaining the highest GPA among Greek organizations, set a standard for student achievement in an area where educational empowerment is paramount. 

Perhaps most impressively, Beta Iota demonstrated its resilience and commitment to perpetuity during the 2012-2013 academic year. Under the sole leadership of Kenisha Dennis, the chapter not only survived but thrived, culminating in the initiation of eight new members. This dedication to growth and continuity exemplifies Alpha Kappa Alpha's enduring impact in communities like Bridgeport, where strong, service-oriented organizations can make a significant difference. 

Since its founding, Beta Iota has remained true to its vow of perpetuity, consistently initiating service-minded new members and expanding its influence. Nearly 15 years later, over 60 women began their journey in Alpha Kappa Alpha as members of the Beautiful Beta Iota chapter. Many were first-generation college graduates, many were first-generation Americans, and all were women living Alpha Kappa Alpha's purpose in word and action. 

The chapter continues to drive positive change at the University of Bridgeport and throughout Fairfield County. By living out Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated's purpose in a community that deeply benefits from its presence, Beta Iota showcases the vital role that historically Black Greek-letter organizations play in uplifting and empowering underserved areas. Through its ongoing commitment to excellence, service, and sisterhood, Beta Iota ensures that Alpha Kappa Alpha's mission remains vibrant and impactful in Bridgeport and beyond.
